Boldogkőváralja Castle is located in a village of Boldogkőváralja in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county in North- Eastern Hungary. The castle was first mentioned in 1282. It was constructed after the Mongol invasion. The castle passed through several noble families. In the 15h century it was expanded, but the 17th century new tactics left the castle abandoned and in ruins. It is one of the few castles in Hungary that saw virtually no reconstruction. Most of the Medieval structures are in the original condition and in a fairly good state. Additionally there are very few limitations for the tourists so you can climb and access most of the buildings, starting from the basements and kitchens to towers and castle walls.
